Come join Habitat to celebrate
The Interfaith Build has been an opportunity for faith communities to join together for the common purpose of building a simple, decent, affordable home partnering with a family in need. Participating faith communities educated their members about housing needs for low income families, raised money, shared food & provided volunteer labor to build a house along side the selected family.
What are the benefits to the faith community?
This Interfaith project had a mission to build harmony and understanding among different faith communities. In a world where our differences often tear us apart, the goal was to concentrate on our similarities & create something truly special. This local service opportunity called people to reach out to the community and put their faith into action. Our UU social justice efforts were certainly revitalized, as members came together for meetings with other faith communities (Mosque to Synagogue and more), opportunities to meet the family, sharing ethnic food, fund raising and hands-on building in fellowship.
A Somali family (Guled and Saido, 7 children ages 2 - 18 and Saido's mother) are very excited for their home to be finished. Guled works at IBM in manufacturing. When Habitat discussed the Interfaith build with him, he shared that he leads an assembly line group at IBM that includes Somalis, Cambodians, Sudanese, Eastern Europeans, Hispanics as well as Caucasians - so he "lives" interfaith in a way every work day. The family adults have been actively involved in the completion of their home.
